What Is the Trump Meme Coin?
TokenTax content follows strict guidelines for editorial accuracy and integrity. We do not accept money from third party sites, so we can give you the most unbiased and accurate information possible.
Official Trump (TRUMP) is a meme coin launched on Solana on January 17, 2025, shortly before Donald Trump's second inauguration.
The token has a maximum supply of 1 billion, with 80% originally allocated to Trump-affiliated companies under a multi-year unlocking schedule.
Official TRUMP is different from MAGA, an older, unofficial Ethereum token that also uses the ticker TRUMP. The two have different blockchains, contract addresses, and issuers.
For US taxpayers, selling, swapping, or spending TRUMP generally creates a taxable disposal reported on Form 8949, and spending SOL, USDC, or other crypto to buy it can create a taxable gain or loss too.

What is the official Trump meme coin?
Official Trump (TRUMP) is a meme coin launched on Solana on January 17, 2025, three days before Donald Trump's second inauguration. The token uses Trump's name and likeness and draws its identity from the "Fight Fight Fight" slogan associated with the July 2024 assassination attempt.
The project launched with 200 million tokens available and a maximum supply of 1 billion, scheduled for release over three years. Of the total supply, 10% went to public distribution, 10% to liquidity, and 80% to creators and CIC Digital. That 80% unlocks on a multi-year schedule rather than entering the market at once.
Unlike cryptocurrencies designed for payments or decentralized applications, TRUMP began as a collectible and speculative asset. Its official website now also runs a Coin Club that uses token holdings to determine eligibility for certain experiences and events.
Who created the Trump meme coin?
Official TRUMP is associated with CIC Digital LLC, an affiliate of the Trump Organization, and Fight Fight Fight LLC. The project's website identifies these two companies as holders of the creators' allocation. It also states that CIC Digital and Celebration Cards LLC, which owns Fight Fight Fight, receive revenue related to trading activity.
This makes official TRUMP different from MAGA and other unofficial Trump-themed tokens, which were created independently.
How does the Trump meme coin work?
TRUMP is a token on Solana, so it relies on an existing blockchain rather than running its own network. Transfers and decentralized trades use Solana and require SOL for network fees. The project's website also lists an official token address on TRON.
TRUMP doesn't give holders ownership in a company, a share of profits, or governance rights. Its market value depends heavily on trading activity, demand, and sentiment.
The Coin Club adds a separate feature: registered holders may qualify for event invitations and other experiences based on their holdings and each event's rules. Holding tokens doesn't guarantee any particular benefit.
How TRUMP is taxed in the US
The IRS treats TRUMP as property (IRS Notice 2014-21).
Buying with US dollars: Not taxable by itself. Your cost basis is the purchase price plus fees.
Buying with SOL, USDC, or other crypto: Generally a taxable disposal of the crypto you spend, creating a capital gain or loss if it was held for investment. The transaction is reported on Form 8949 and Schedule D.
Selling, swapping, or spending: Each disposal of TRUMP creates a capital gain or loss (proceeds minus cost basis), reported on Form 8949 and Schedule D.
Airdrops and rewards: TRUMP you receive as an airdrop, reward, or payment is generally ordinary income at fair market value when you gain dominion and control. How you report it depends on why you received the tokens: payments from an employer are wages, self-employment income generally goes on Schedule C, and other digital asset income generally goes on Schedule 1, line 8v. That value becomes your cost basis, and a later sale goes on Form 8949. Gifts from another person aren't income to you.
Wallet transfers: Moving TRUMP between wallets you own isn't taxable by itself, though the SOL you pay as a network fee is a small disposal.
Forms: Coinbase and Robinhood say they provide Form 1099-DA for reportable crypto activity. Self-custody wallets don't issue one. Keep your own records and report taxable activity even if you don't receive Form 1099-DA.

Trump, stablecoins, and the GENIUS Act
In July 2025, Trump signed the GENIUS Act, the first federal framework for payment stablecoins. The law regulates stablecoin issuers; it didn't change how trades are taxed. Swapping TRUMP for USDC, USDT, or another stablecoin is still a taxable disposal, even though the coin you receive is designed to hold a stable value. Keep records of each swap, airdrop, and sale, because the proceeds and cost basis determine your gain or loss.
Why did the Trump meme coin surge at launch?
TRUMP's price surged after its January 17, 2025, launch, peaking above $70 around January 19 before falling sharply. The timing, just before the inauguration, drove much of the demand, and the launch pulled trading volume and liquidity away from other meme coins.
Bitcoin also hit a record high above $109,000 around the inauguration, part of a broader market rally. Social media attention and fear of missing out added to early buying. Like most meme coins, TRUMP then fell sharply from its peak.
Trump meme coin supply, unlocks, and news
Concentrated ownership: The original allocation reserved 80% of the 1 billion supply for creators and CIC Digital. That raised questions about concentrated ownership and the market effect of future token releases.
Token unlocks: Unlocks increase the supply available for trading, although an unlock doesn't mean the holder will sell.
Trading revenue: The official website identifies affiliated companies that receive revenue from trading activity, thereby linking token activity to Trump-associated businesses.
Holder events: In May 2025, the project hosted a dinner with Donald Trump for top holders ranked on a holder leaderboard. The Coin Club has since offered other experiences tied to holdings.
Did the Trump meme coin have an airdrop?
The official TRUMP token launched with a public distribution and a liquidity allocation, neither of which is an airdrop. In February 2025, the project announced that people who bought Trump-branded NFTs or merchandise before February 15 could claim three TRUMP tokens through a promotional airdrop. Treat any other "TRUMP airdrop" link or message as a likely scam, and never connect your wallet to claim one.
In the US, airdropped tokens are generally ordinary income at fair market value when you gain dominion and control, even if you didn't ask for them. The IRS's direct airdrop guidance (Rev. Rul. 2019-24) covers crypto received after a hard fork, so other promotional distributions depend on their facts. If you later sell airdropped TRUMP, you may also owe capital gains tax on any appreciation since receiving it. The fair market value included in your income generally becomes your cost basis, so the same amount isn't taxed again as a capital gain.
How TRUMP is traded and how to verify the mint
Choose an exchange or Solana decentralized exchange that supports official TRUMP.
Confirm the blockchain network the platform uses.
Set up a compatible Solana wallet if you plan to hold tokens outside an exchange.
Verify the official mint address before buying: 6p6xgHyF7AeE6TZkSmFsko444wqoP15icUSqi2jfGiPN. The project's website also lists a separate TRON address.
Review trading fees, network fees, and the transaction details.
Complete the purchase and keep your transaction records for tax reporting.
US exchanges, including Coinbase and Robinhood, list TRUMP, and it trades on decentralized exchanges on Solana, such as Jupiter and Raydium. Availability varies by platform and state. Buying TRUMP with SOL or USDC is a taxable disposal of the crypto you spend. P2P trades through forums or marketplaces carry a higher risk of scams.
How official TRUMP differs from MAGA
MAGA is an older, unofficial Trump-themed meme coin that also uses the on-chain ticker TRUMP, so the two can appear under the same ticker on price sites. They are unrelated tokens:
Blockchain: MAGA is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum (contract 0x576e2BeD8F7b46D34016198911Cdf9886f78bea7). Official TRUMP is on Solana.
Launch: MAGA launched in August 2023, about 17 months before official TRUMP.
Supply: MAGA has about 47 million tokens. Official TRUMP has a maximum of 1 billion.
Affiliation: MAGA has no known affiliation with Donald Trump. A wallet linked to Trump received about 579,000 MAGA in 2023, but receiving tokens doesn't make a project official.
Fees: MAGA's Ethereum contract has a 1% buy tax and a 1% sell tax, according to CertiK, and the rate can't be changed. Its contract address is 0x576e2BeD8F7b46D34016198911Cdf9886f78bea7.
Trading: MAGA has traded on Ethereum decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap. Exchange availability can change, so check the exact contract address and current trading pairs before buying.
Buying one token gives you no exposure to the other. Copycats often reuse the same names and tickers, so the contract address is the only reliable identifier.
Why TRUMP price forecasts are unreliable
TRUMP's price depends on demand, market sentiment, and news involving the project and Donald Trump. Token unlocks and changes to holder experiences can also affect trading interest. None of these factors makes the price predictable, and TRUMP remains a speculative asset whose value can change sharply. For a live quote, check a market tracker such as CoinGecko or CoinMarketCap. For taxes, use the fair market value at the time of each transaction.
