  • Pudgy Penguins is an Ethereum NFT collection of 8,888 Penguins that launched in July 2021 and has grown into toys, trading cards, games, and licensing. PENGU, the project's fungible token, launched separately on Solana in December 2024.

  • The IRS treats both as property. Buying a Penguin with ETH is a taxable disposal of the ETH, selling or swapping an NFT or PENGU goes on Form 8949, and PENGU received in the airdrop is ordinary income at its value when you received it.

  • Both assets are highly speculative and can lose most or all of their value. Not receiving a Form 1099-DA doesn't remove your obligation to report taxable transactions.

What is the story of Pudgy Penguins?

  • Pudgy Penguins launched on Ethereum in July 2021 with a collection of 8,888 NFTs.

  • Each Penguin has its own mix of traits, which creates different looks and levels of rarity across the collection.

  • In April 2022, a group led by Luca Netz acquired the project and began expanding it beyond NFTs, starting with Pudgy Toys, which reached Walmart shelves in 2023.

  • The brand has since moved into licensing, trading cards, games, and other consumer products.

  • PENGU, the project's official fungible token, launched on Solana in December 2024.

How does Pudgy Penguins work?

Each Pudgy Penguin is an NFT on Ethereum. The blockchain records ownership and transfers, and individual Penguins have different visual traits and rarity. They can be traded on NFT marketplaces, and their value depends on rarity, community sentiment, and broader crypto market trends.

Owning a Pudgy Penguin doesn't guarantee its price will rise, and blockchain records don't protect you from phishing, malicious wallet approvals, fake listings, or marketplace scams.

PENGU is the official fungible token of the Pudgy Penguins ecosystem. It launched as an SPL token on Solana in December 2024 with a total supply of 88,888,888,888 tokens. PENGU and Pudgy Penguins NFTs are separate digital assets that trade independently.

Pudgy Penguins airdrop

Pudgy Penguins launched the PENGU token on December 17, 2024, through an airdrop. The token launched on Solana even though the original NFT collection lives on Ethereum. Part of the PENGU supply went to eligible Pudgy Penguins holders and other qualifying Web3 users. The Pudgy community allocation was 25.9% of the total token supply.

The original PENGU claim period has ended, and the official claim page lists the claim as expired. Be cautious of websites that say you can still collect the airdrop. Never enter a wallet recovery phrase into an airdrop site, and verify token addresses and wallet requests before signing anything.

For US taxpayers, PENGU received through the airdrop is generally ordinary income at its fair market value when the tokens came under your control. That value becomes your cost basis in the tokens.

How to buy Pudgy Penguins?

  • Choose an NFT marketplace: Use a marketplace that lists the verified Pudgy Penguins Ethereum collection.

  • Set up an Ethereum-compatible wallet: You'll need a crypto wallet that supports Ethereum NFTs and enough ETH to cover the purchase and network fees.

  • Verify the collection: Check the collection and contract details instead of relying on the name or artwork alone. Fake collections and look-alike listings exist.

  • Review and complete the purchase: Check the NFT, price, marketplace fees, and estimated gas before signing the transaction.

If you buy an NFT with ETH that has gained or lost value since you acquired it, spending that ETH is a taxable disposal for US taxpayers. You can have a capital gain or loss on the ETH even though you never converted it to dollars.

Where to buy Pudgy Penguins?

Pudgy Penguins trade on NFT marketplaces that support Ethereum collections. Before buying, verify that you're viewing the official collection and check the NFT's token ID, transaction history, and contract details.

Don't rely on artwork, collection names, or search results alone. Scam listings can imitate legitimate NFT collections.

What are the risks of buying Pudgy Penguins?

Pudgy Penguins NFTs are speculative assets. Prices depend on collector demand, rarity, liquidity, the strength of the Pudgy Penguins brand, and broader NFT and crypto market conditions.

An individual NFT may have few interested buyers when you try to sell it. Floor prices can fall sharply, and a quoted floor doesn't guarantee that a particular NFT will sell at that price.

PENGU carries separate risks. It is a fungible Solana token with its own supply, liquidity, token allocations, and market price. Buying a Pudgy Penguin NFT is not the same as buying PENGU.

If you buy either asset, set a budget you could afford to lose entirely.

Pudgy Penguins price today

There isn't one Pudgy Penguins NFT price. Individual NFTs trade at different prices based on traits, rarity, demand, and seller expectations. A collection's floor price is the lowest-priced NFT currently listed, not a guaranteed sale price for every Penguin.

PENGU has a separate market price because it is a fungible token. Its price changes continuously as it trades across crypto markets.

For either asset, check the current marketplace data rather than relying on a price quoted in an article.

How is the value of Pudgy Penguins NFTs measured?

NFT collections don't have a market cap that works like a fungible cryptocurrency's.

Floor price, recent sale prices, trading volume, the number of listed NFTs, and unique holders all provide context, but each has limits. A floor price is only the lowest current asking price and doesn't mean every NFT in the collection could sell at that value.

PENGU is different. As a fungible token, its market capitalization can be calculated from its token price and circulating supply.

Neither a high NFT valuation nor a large token market cap makes an asset low risk.

What is in the Pudgy Penguins ecosystem?

Pudgy Penguins has expanded well beyond its original NFT collection. The ecosystem includes:

  • Pudgy World: A free, browser-based game that launched in March 2026 and is now the project's main gaming focus.

  • Vibes TCG: A physical trading card game built with Orange Cap Games. Its third series reached Target stores nationwide in June 2026.

  • Physical products: Plushies, toys, collectibles, and other merchandise sold through the brand and retail partners.

  • Holder licensing: NFT holders whose Penguins appear on licensed physical products receive a share of net revenue from those products.

  • PENGU: The fungible Solana token associated with the Pudgy Penguins community.

  • The original NFTs: Pudgy Penguins and related collections remain separate Ethereum assets.

Not every product has lasted. Pudgy Party, a mobile game released in August 2025, passed 1 million downloads, but Pudgy Penguins halted its development in June 2026 to focus on Pudgy World.

These products expand the brand's reach, but they don't guarantee higher prices for Pudgy Penguins NFTs or PENGU.

Pudgy Penguins and US taxes

The IRS treats Pudgy Penguins NFTs and PENGU as property (IRS Notice 2014-21). This is how common activity is taxed:

  • Buying a Pudgy Penguin with US dollars: Not taxable. Your cost basis is the purchase price plus gas and marketplace fees.

  • Buying an NFT with ETH: Spending ETH is a disposal of the ETH. If its value changed since you acquired it, you have a capital gain or loss on the ETH.

  • Selling a Pudgy Penguin: If you hold the NFT as a capital asset, the sale is a capital gain or loss equal to your proceeds minus your cost basis. Held more than one year, it's long-term; one year or less, short-term.

  • Swapping an NFT for another digital asset: A taxable disposal of the NFT you give up.

  • Receiving PENGU through the 2024 airdrop: Ordinary income at fair market value when you gained control of the tokens (Rev. Rul. 2019-24). Report it on Schedule 1 (line 8v), not on Form 8949.

  • Selling, swapping, or spending PENGU later: A separate capital gain or loss based on your proceeds minus the basis you reported as income.

  • Licensing payments: Revenue-share payments from licensed products featuring your Penguin are ordinary income. If the activity rises to a business, report it on Schedule C, which also brings

    self-employment tax.

  • Wallet transfers: Moving an NFT or PENGU between wallets you own isn't taxable, though ETH or SOL spent on the network fee is a small disposal of that token.

Taxable sales and exchanges of investment-held NFTs and PENGU go on Form 8949 and Schedule D. Keep records of the purchase price, acquisition date, the ETH or other crypto used to pay, network and marketplace fees, wallet addresses, token IDs, airdrop records, and sale proceeds.

US brokers began reporting digital asset sales, including certain NFT sales, on Form 1099-DA for transactions in 2025. Self-custody wallets don't issue a 1099-DA. Whether or not you receive one, you are responsible for reporting every taxable transaction.

Are Pudgy Penguins taxed as collectibles?

Not automatically. Collectibles held for more than one year are subject to a maximum federal capital gains rate of 28%, but the IRS hasn't finalized how NFTs are treated as collectibles. Under the interim look-through approach in IRS Notice 2023-27, the treatment depends on the asset or right the NFT is associated with, and the IRS has said it needs to issue more guidance on when a digital file counts as a work of art. Don't apply the collectibles rate to a Pudgy Penguin just because it's called a collectible.
